What is the difference between cashless, contactless and mobile payments?

The following three terms are often used synonymously in the context of digital payments, but are technically different:

Cashless payments

The generic term for all transactions without physical cash. These include classic card payments as well as parking via app or payments via QR code.

Contactless payments

A form of cashless payment that does not require direct contact between card or smartphone and reader. Data transmission is usually carried out via NFC (Near Field Communication) or optically via QR code.

Pay on the go

Here, the smartphone or smartwatch serves as a digital wallet. It is a sub-form of contactless payment that either uses wallet services such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay — or browser-based app solutions are used directly in the payment process.

Parking via app: An overview of digital payment options

Modern parking space management is characterized by flexibility and user-friendliness. Different target groups — from occasional parking people to long-term parkers — of all age groups today expect various options for paying for their parking digitally.

It is not only the payment method itself that is decisive, but the underlying system. Because only the right infrastructure enables smooth and digital processes — from entry to billing.

License plate recognition: The technology that makes everything possible

The prerequisite for digital payment when parking is technology that automates the process and at the same time works in compliance with data protection regulations: the Number plate recognition. When entering and leaving, scanners record the vehicle license plate and automatically determine the parking time based on the time stamps. The license plate acts as a digital parking ticket — barriers, paper tickets or physical parking tickets are superfluous. Modern providers such as Peter Park rely on camera-based systems combined with their own software to enable precise and reliable billing.

Contactless payment at vending machines via NFC

Even though parking via app is becoming increasingly important, the pay machine remains an important touchpoint for many parking users. Modern systems have long since made cashless and contactless payments possible there. Against this background, more and more parking space owners are consciously opting against an additional cash option — for example to reduce problems with a coin changer, emptying intervals and security risks.

Using NFC technology, parkers hold their EC or credit card directly at the terminal. Alternatively, digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay can be used via smartphone or smartwatch. The transaction takes place within a few seconds — without cash and without physical contact.

Technical requirement:Both the payment medium (card or mobile device) and the terminal require an NFC chip or an NFC antenna. Data transmission works over short distances — usually up to a maximum of four centimeters.

How secure is NFC? Contactless payments via NFC are secured by encryption and tokenization. The real card number is replaced by a digital placeholder. Since NFC only works at a very short distance and no sensitive personal data is transmitted, the process is considered to be just as secure as a classic card payment with the card inserted.

Especially during peak hours, this contactless payment method ensures faster processing and noticeably reduces waiting times at the pay machine.

Mobile payment via smartphone

A particularly convenient way to pay for parking digitally is browser-based payment via your own smartphone — i.e. parking via app, but without a classic app download. Parking people scan a QR code on site or follow a link provided and go directly to the digital payment page. There is no need to register or install an app. This reduces barriers to entry and enables use on almost all devices — regardless of the operating system.

The process is simple: enter the license plate, check parking time, select a payment method and pay. In many cases, the parking fee can still be paid up to 24 hours after the exit. This time flexibility provides customer-friendly security in case payment is forgotten on site.

Digital solution for returning users

In addition to short-term parking, employees, residents and regular visitors also need flexible digital options. A web-based online shop makes it possible to purchase and manage time tickets or parking permits completely online.

Access is also available here via a link or QR code. After registering once, users can manage their license plates, purchase tickets and activate parking discounts.

The benefits at a glance:

  • No physical delivery of parking permits
  • No administrative administration by the parking area owner
  • Flexible pricing (e.g. employee rates, quotas, discounts)

Since the license plate serves as a digital parking pass, there is also no need for physical parking tickets here. This creates scalable, administrative relief for operators — especially for larger areas with recurring user groups.

Automatic Payment: Fully automated parking without a manual payment process

The consistent development of paying for parking digitally is fully automated billing — completely without an active, manual payment process. With the feature Automatic Payment Peter Park integrates this form of automatic billing directly into his license-based parking system. This consistently takes parking via app forward — towards a completely digital and automatic process in which parking people no longer have to worry about anything.

After a one-time registration, the following applies: Drive in, park, drive out — that's it. The parking fee to be paid is automatically deducted from the stored payment method. Only the actual parking time used is paid fairly and all parking processes can be viewed transparently in the online account.

Such “Free-flow” systems significantly increase convenience and at the same time minimize forgotten payments. For operators, the rate of non-payers is reduced, while parking users benefit from a seamless experience.

Pay for parking digitally: efficiency, convenience and future security

Whether it's contactless payment at vending machines, browser-based parking via app, digital long-term parking solutions or automatic billing — modern parking systems today offer a variety of options for paying for parking digitally. It is not the individual payment method that is decisive, but the interplay of technology, user-friendliness and administrative efficiency.

Digital parking solutions such as those from Peter Park show that parking space management has long been more than just a ticket and barrier. It is a data-based, flexible system that offers benefits to both users and operators and adapts to changing payment habits.
